Port side night watch, 22:00h. by Anne Twaalfhoven
The helmsman is softly singing, probably to keep his mind of the cold or because he is bored. As we have been going north, night watches have changed. Where, during the Caribbean nights the watch would gather on the poopdeck to keep the wheelperson company and to chill underneath the stars, everyone is now seeking shelter in the slightly warmer chartroom, or in the cosy galley. >> Read more

From Caribbean Winter to European spring.. by Elise
People who know me can probably imagine how I will look like if i tell them that we are experiencing a temperature difference of about 20 degrees the last month. For the people who know me a little less (or not at all) I'll give a short impression of my cold weather gear of the last days.. Keep in mind that I'm cold quickly and the others on board might experience this European spring different. >> Read more

The sea by Captain Jorne Langelaan
Since the departure from Grenada, end of March, the ship and its crew (and the 24.000 bars of chocolate!) have been mainly at sea. One wonders here on land how it is to pass such long periods on the sea, being surrounded only by endless views of water, day and night. Captain Jorne made a blog post on the ship’s blog, to explain (or at least try, as he says). His original Dutch text is translated here, and I’ve added some pictures that the crew has made earlier on this voyage on the sea – views speak for themselves… >> Read more

Lecture on board, by Charlie.
Last week we made a scheduled stop in the Azores, in the middle of the Atlantic, to take on supplies, fresh water, etc, and for the ship and her master to investigate trading possibilities. We were handsomely welcomed by the inhabitants, and enjoyed great Portuguese hospitality... Among the many friends we made were a pair of marine biologists who taught at the famous faculty of Marine Science at the University of the Azores... >> Read more

The story of a trainee's stay on the island of Faial in the Azores.... a fantasy (part 3), by Charlie, trainee.
Departure. We wake to a pile of wind. We muster and the captain describes his plan for our departure. I wish my friend Mott was here. He would get it. I wish that everyone who had ever sailed this boat and loved her were here, they would get it. I understand it has taken me four weeks aboard to begin to get it, but now I get it.
In the last weblog Taeo described the manoeuvre of our departure. >> Read more

The story of a trainee's stay on the island of Faial in the Azores.... a fantasy (part 2), by Charlie, trainee.
Port. The last day of our stay was my birthday... 51 today! We are due to leave after breakfast. I make my farewell calls home the night before, send emails to my mother, sister and sons, receive one back from my eldest  wishing me happy birthday, bon voyage and other little grace notes which fill my eyes with tears. But no wind at daybreak, so we wait on board until our departure is postponed till evening... eight sharp, wind permitting. Everything I asked for on my birthday is given me. >> Read more

Climbing the mast
On the morning of their departure Mott and Charlie got their ‘tour of the mast’.  Brigantine Tres Hombres has 315 m2 of sail to be managed by the crew. The 2 masts on deck are about 29 meters high and to open and close the sails crew needs to climb in the masts, on open sea and during sailing of course - rain or sunshine.   Usually new crew members climb up the mast for the first time in the harbor, to get used to the height and balancing themselves when the boat is not moving yet. First they all put on the safetly straps with a hook they can click into the ropes of the mast... >> Read more

Today we had our last full day on the boat to prepare it for sailing of tomorrow! Early in the morning we (Mott, Charlie, Claire and myself) went to the warehouse where the chocolate is stored to load the truck that will take us to the harbor in St . George. Quiet morning and they quickly loaded all the boxes, very nice view indeed and exactly before the rain started (tropical rain so only short). Happy crew tasting Grenada Chocolate
Just a short post to show you how happy chocolate can make people! the crew obviously is a bit deprived of a few things on the ship while sailing, and chocolate is one of the most important things they mention... Bloody Bay
Tres Hombres achored at Bloody Bay on the Island Tobago
Description: Bloody Bay is a glorious sheltered bay with golden sands and clear blue waters. It is nearly always deserted, except for the odd fishermen. It is also the last beach accessible on the northern Caribbean coast before the road turns east and heads through the rainforest to Roxborough. The name for this beautiful beach originates from a famous naval battle in the 1660's when an English fleet defeated a combined Dutch and French fleet. So bloody was the battle that the sea turned red.

The evening before, by deckhand Edgars
the onset of every great or just as equally insignificant event there is usually something that happens before that. And before before that. And before before before that. A gust of wind fills the topsail, and the ship moves on. As simple as that. All the commands pouring out of the captains mouth to trim the sails precisely, the meters upon meters of rope that had to be pulled to place the topsail right in the path of the wind, the endless rolling of the helm to keep her in that same path of the wind.. individually and in unison all that then constitutes the before, before, before. >> Read more ...

Fair Transport: The Ship Tres Hombres by: Wine, Woman, Travel
The sailing cargo vessel Tres Hombres entering the Douro 12 November
Whilst many people and firms in recent years have worked on developing sustainable production for a wide range of goods and fair trade and fair payment for their workers, the idea of fairness and sustainability failed when it came to long distance transport.  CO2 offsetting is some small sop to conscience, but there seemed no alternatives that would not create environmental damage in the first place. >> Read more ...

Did you know that the world’s 16 largest ships produce as much emissions as all the cars in the world? Since Jorne Langelaan spoke at TEDxAmsterdam 2010 we know what to do: stop using engines and start using sails. Jorne told Tim how things are with FairTransport, one of five ideas supported by Ideas Worth Doing.

It wasn’t easy to reach Jorne because at this very moment he’s sailing the Tres Hombres, a cargo ship using wind as it’s only fuel. When Jorne answered my questions he just arrived in Porto, where the ship will host an event about sustainability in Portugal.

RUM TRES HOMBRES GRAN AÑEJO at the Berlin Rum Festival
The dream to transport cargo on their own sailboat between the Atlantic islands became true for Jorne, Arjen and Andreas, three adventurous men. After a construction period of 3 years with the help of 150 people from 20 different countries, the Tres Hombres sailed to Haiti in 2010 with relief supplies, and returned to Europe with a load of Rum Tres Hombres Gran Añejo. Since then, they started a liner service to the Caribbean, and plan on returning with Tres Hombres rum from a different island each year. >> Read more ...

Sail Transport Network - The Past Meets the Future
As oil prices sky-rocket, making common forms of transportation more expensive, is the 7000 year old method of propelling boats using sails about to make a comeback? Jan Lundberg, of the Sail Transport Network (STN), thinks so. He points out that most of the people in the world live on coasts or near inland waterways, and so could be reached by sailing boats. With a good boat and a working knowledge of tides and currents, most places can be reached by sailing vessels. He says, "A few years ago sail transport was thought to be off on the distant horizon and impractical in the 'real world.' This is changing rapidly." >> Read more ...

The Winds of Change with Green Cargo
When the talented Dutch artist G.W.C. Voorduin put paint to parchment in his 1842 work titled 'Bonaire', little did he know that the scene captured would resemble the harbor town of Kralendijk some 170 years later. Voorduin was also a naval commander, so it is fitting that the focus of this painting was a massive, brigantine sailing ship moored off the coast. That is what I encountered at the Kralendijk docks when I laid my eyes on Tres Hombres, a 25-ton, two-masted, mostly wooden wonder. >> Read more ...

Eco-friendly cargo shipment by sail: Tres Hombres Packet Company
Clean Air at Sea supports technology that improves marine air quality. Though we are manufacturers of emissions reduction systems, there are many technologies in the market related to sustainable shipping. Many in the industry first went to sea inspired by the romantic notion of the wind in the sails and a sense of adventure. Until recently, those days were long past. However, a new company has started that aims to bring back those days of sail in the shipment of cargo. That’s right: the tall ship has returned. >> Read more ...
